Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, means breathing oxygen inside a gently pressurised chamber, so your body can take in more oxygen than it normally could.

At Cocoon, HBOT is delivered as a guided at-home programme in Auckland — combining regular sessions, a personalised plan and ongoing support throughout your programme.

Commonly explored by people seeking support for concussion, long COVID, chronic fatigue, neurological conditions and recovery after injury.

More than access to a chamber.

How it works

A simple way to picture it

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works by combining oxygen with gentle pressure. This allows your body to absorb oxygen differently than it normally would.

Here’s the basic idea:

Step 1

Gentle pressure

The chamber is pressurised a little above normal air pressure, while you relax inside.

Step 2

Dissolves into plasma

Oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma, not only your red blood cells.

Step 3

Reaches further

That oxygen-rich plasma can carry oxygen into areas that may receive less under normal conditions.

Think of a fizzy drink

When gas is placed under pressure, it dissolves into the liquid — then, when the pressure is released, the bubbles appear. HBOT works in a similar way: inside the chamber, gentle pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve into the body’s fluids and tissues, increasing the amount available throughout the body.

Why people come to Cocoon

The experiences we hear most often

Everyone’s story is different. But many people who contact Cocoon are dealing with symptoms that have been lingering, recovery that feels slower than expected, or health challenges that are affecting everyday life.

They are often looking for ways to support their body’s own recovery and improve how they feel day to day.

  • Feeling foggy, flat or mentally fatigued, and wanting to support clearer thinking.
  • Living with ongoing pain, inflammation or discomfort that hasn’t settled.
  • Running low on energy, and hoping to rebuild everyday stamina.
  • Recovering from an injury, surgery or illness, and looking for ways to support recovery.
  • Managing a long-term or complex condition, and looking for something to add alongside their existing care.

Whatever brings you here, the starting point is the same — a conversation about whether HBOT is a good fit for you.

Why consistency matters

HBOT is designed as a course, not a one-off

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is typically delivered as a course of regular sessions over several weeks. The challenge for many people is maintaining that frequency when appointments, travel, scheduling and per-session costs are involved.

Most structured HBOT programmes involve around 40 sessions over several weeks.

That’s a lot of trips to a clinic — which is exactly where consistency tends to break down.

That’s why Cocoon was designed differently. With the chamber in your home, sessions fit around your life — making it easier to stay consistent throughout the programme.

The guidance behind it

Guided by Dr Gary Dennis

Founder of Cocoon

Gary’s interest in hyperbaric oxygen therapy grew from his own recovery journey following a serious brain injury. That experience shaped Cocoon’s approach — not simply providing access to a chamber, but creating a guided programme designed around the individual.

Today, every Cocoon programme is personally guided by Gary, combining home-based HBOT with ongoing guidance, support and review — so you’re never left to figure it out alone.

The Cocoon difference

More than a chamber

Most hyperbaric oxygen therapy is delivered in a clinic, one session at a time. Cocoon was designed differently — built around home access, daily consistency, and a guided programme rather than individual appointments.

Good to know

Common questions about Cocoon

How is Cocoon different from a hyperbaric clinic?+
Most clinics deliver HBOT one appointment at a time, on site. Cocoon delivers it as a guided programme in your own home — with a personalised plan, unlimited daily use across the programme, and ongoing support from Gary throughout.
Do I need a referral or diagnosis to start?+
You don’t need a referral to enquire. Gary will talk with you about your situation and history first, and if HBOT isn’t appropriate or isn’t the right fit, we’ll say so. We’re also happy for you to involve your GP or specialist along the way.
How many sessions are involved?+
HBOT is usually done as a course rather than a one-off. Structured programmes commonly involve around 40 sessions over several weeks — which is exactly why Cocoon is built around daily use at home, to make completing a full course more manageable.
What does a session feel like?+
Most people find a session relaxing. You rest inside the chamber while it’s gently pressurised — some read, listen to music, or simply close their eyes. You may notice a feeling in your ears as the pressure changes, a little like flying or diving, and we show you simple ways to manage it.
Is HBOT safe?+
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is widely used and generally well tolerated. At Cocoon, every programme follows clear safety protocols, and Gary talks through your history and circumstances during your assessment to check it’s appropriate for you. If it isn’t the right fit, we’ll tell you.
Is HBOT a replacement for my current care?+
No. HBOT is something people explore alongside their existing care, not instead of it. We’d always encourage you to keep working with your GP or specialist, and we’re happy to fit around that.
