Long COVID & Post-Viral Fatigue

Still exhausted months after recovering from a virus?

For some people, fatigue, brain fog, crashing after activity and a feeling of not being themselves linger for weeks or months after a viral illness — long after they expected to bounce back. Cocoon offers guided, at-home hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) that some people choose to explore as part of their wider recovery and wellbeing plan, alongside the care of their own doctor.

Does this sound familiar?

When you just can't shake it off

Recovering from a virus is usually a matter of days or weeks — but for some people, the effects linger far longer. If several of these feel familiar, you're not alone.

Persistent fatigue Brain fog Crashing after activity Post-exertional malaise Breathlessness Poor sleep Aches and pains Difficulty concentrating Low mood Feeling not yourself

These are common experiences with Long COVID and other post-viral conditions. Your recovery is best guided by your own doctor — and some people also look for additional ways to support their wider wellbeing.

Understanding post-viral fatigue

Why recovery after a virus can take so long

Most people recover from a viral illness within days or weeks. But for some, symptoms — especially fatigue, brain fog and feeling wiped out after even small amounts of activity — can persist for months. This is often described as Long COVID or, more broadly, post-viral fatigue.

Why it happens isn't fully understood, and it varies a lot from person to person. Some people describe feeling as though their energy system never fully reset after the virus, making everyday tasks far harder than they once were — which is part of why it can be so hard to get answers, and why recovery is best worked through with your own doctor over time.

About the therapy

Why some people explore HBOT for post-viral fatigue

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy isn't a cure for Long COVID or post-viral fatigue. But when recovery drags on and answers are hard to find, some people choose to explore HBOT as one part of their wider wellbeing and recovery plan. Here's what it actually involves.

01

Oxygen under gentle pressure

During a session you breathe oxygen-enriched air while the chamber is gently pressurised, allowing more oxygen than usual to dissolve into your bloodstream.

02

Dissolved oxygen circulates through the body

That dissolved oxygen circulates in the blood throughout the time you spend in the chamber, reaching tissues around the body.

03

Part of a wider recovery

People generally use HBOT as one part of a broader routine — alongside rest, pacing and the advice of their own health professionals.

Whether HBOT is a sensible fit depends entirely on your situation, and it isn't right for everyone. Our team will talk it through with you honestly, alongside your own doctor's advice, before you decide anything.

The Cocoon difference

Why at-home HBOT is different

Most hyperbaric therapy means travelling to a clinic for short, scheduled appointments. Cocoon brings the chamber to you — which changes how easily it fits into your life.

Traditional clinic-based HBOT

  • Travelling to and from each appointment
  • Fixed, limited session times
  • Fitting around the clinic's availability
  • Waiting rooms and parking

At home with Cocoon

  • Your chamber is installed in your own home
  • Unlimited sessions across your programme
  • Use it at the times that suit your day
  • No travel, no waiting rooms

Consistency is often one of the biggest challenges in any recovery programme. Having your chamber available at home can make it easier to build therapy into everyday life — which can matter when energy is in short supply.

Dr Gary Dennis has spent much of his career supporting people with complex and chronic health challenges, with a special interest in neurological recovery and dysautonomia. His own experience recovering from a serious brain injury led him to explore hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the role that consistent access can play within a broader recovery programme.

Every Cocoon programme begins with a personal conversation with Gary to understand your situation, answer your questions and determine whether at-home HBOT may be appropriate for your goals. From installation through to ongoing support, you'll have direct access to guidance throughout your programme.

How it works

Your Cocoon programme

Recovery takes time, and everyone's path is different. Here's how a Cocoon programme works — from the first conversation through to ongoing support.

1

Consultation

We start with a conversation about your symptoms, history and goals, to understand whether HBOT is a sensible fit for you.

2

Personalised HBOT programme

If it's appropriate, we map out a programme — session length, frequency, and how it fits around your routine.

3

At-home therapy

Your chamber is installed in your home, giving you convenient access to HBOT without travelling to appointments or fitting sessions around clinic schedules.

4

Ongoing support

We stay in touch throughout your programme, checking in and adjusting your plan as you go.

Common questions

Long COVID, fatigue & HBOT, answered

What is Long COVID?
Long COVID is a term for symptoms that continue or develop weeks or months after a COVID-19 infection, beyond the usual recovery period. It can involve fatigue, brain fog, breathlessness and a range of other symptoms, and it's diagnosed and managed by a doctor.
What is post-viral fatigue?
Post-viral fatigue describes ongoing tiredness and related symptoms that linger after a viral illness — not only COVID-19, but other infections too. For most people it eases with time, but for some it persists, which is something to work through with your doctor.
Why am I still exhausted months after being unwell?
Lingering fatigue after a virus is more common than many people realise, and why it happens isn't fully understood. It can be frustrating and isolating, especially when tests come back normal. Your doctor is the best person to help you understand what's going on for you.
Why do I crash after activity?
Many people with Long COVID or post-viral fatigue notice that even small amounts of activity can be followed by a "crash" — a worsening of symptoms, sometimes a day or two later. This is often called post-exertional malaise, and pacing is something many people find helps. Your doctor can guide you on managing it.
Why don't my test results explain how I feel?
Many people with Long COVID or post-viral fatigue report ongoing symptoms despite their tests appearing normal. Your doctor is the best person to interpret results and investigate what's happening, but normal tests don't always reflect how someone is feeling day to day — and that gap can be one of the most frustrating parts of all.
Can HBOT help with Long COVID or post-viral fatigue?
We can't claim that, and HBOT isn't a cure. Long COVID and post-viral fatigue are managed by your doctor. Some people choose to explore HBOT as one part of their wider recovery and wellbeing plan, but whether it's appropriate for you is individual — and it's something to consider alongside, not instead of, your doctor's care.
What therapies do people explore for Long COVID?
Management is usually tailored to the person and led by their doctor — it can involve pacing, gradual activity, rest, sleep and managing individual symptoms. Some people also explore additional options such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). HBOT isn't a cure and isn't right for everyone; it's something some people choose to add to a wider plan after talking it through.
What does a typical HBOT programme at Cocoon involve?
A typical Cocoon programme runs over about six weeks using a chamber installed in your home. Session length and frequency are mapped out with you based on your situation, so the routine fits around everyday life — which can matter when energy is limited.
Is HBOT safe?
HBOT is generally well tolerated, but it isn't suitable for everyone and there are some conditions where it isn't recommended. That's why every programme starts with a conversation to check whether it's appropriate for you.
